Lawson-West Celebrates International Women's Day!
Managing Director, Vicky Jones, explains:
“As a law firm, Lawson-West Solicitors is strongly supportive of women in the workplace, helping them to grow as individuals and in their chosen career. 82% of our firm is female and our Board is made up of 75% women, this demonstrates our commitment to women at every age and stage of their career. As Managing Director I feel extremely proud of this achievement. We celebrate International Women’s Day and embrace diversity for everyone."
We asked staff to share their thoughts about being a 'woman in the workplace'...
“It’s so rare to work for a law firm where every head of department and 75% of the Board is female. Lawson-West proves that ambitious women like me don’t need to be held back just because of our gender or family commitments – other firms should take note!”
“Lawson-West is a great supporter of women facing the menopause. Not only do they have firm-wide training on the subject, but there is also proactive support and an open culture to discuss any work issues surrounding the subject. This sets the firm apart from other employers.”
“I don’t necessarily feel like a woman in the workplace. I don’t see or feel a distinction between myself and my male colleagues/counterparts. I suspect this is because I work for a forward-thinking company, unlike previous roles where the companies were male-dominant and run solely by men. Lawson West really does strive to be inclusive. We even had menopause awareness training recently – it’s comforting to know that women are not only considered, but considered equal – it’s empowering having a board of directors with a strong female presence”.
“Please don’t think of me as aggressive – I am being assertive
Please don’t think of me as bossy – I am leading the way
Please don’t think of me as being difficult – when I am just telling the truth
Please don’t think of me as being complicated - I need to ask the hard questions”
“Being a woman in the workplace is very enjoyable and rewarding however, it is hard juggling home and family life. I am very proud of what I have achieved and hope that I am inspirational to my daughter.”
“I am delighted that the situation has changed so much over the past 15 years for women in the workplace. When I went back to work after my first son was born, I wasn’t able to go back to my original role and I had to fight to find a part time position so that I could be there for my son while he was so small. 15 years later not only was I able to go back to my original role with a compressed working pattern but I also received a promotion! I really do feel like it is the best of both worlds to be able to carry on furthering my career and at the same time be able to be there for my youngest rather than just having to find any part time job available. I hope this situation becomes the norm in other firms too as women shouldn’t have to choose between having their career and being a mother.”
