Woman denied marriage wins pay out of £300,000
A woman who was falsely proposed to by her long-term partner has been awarded £300,000 in the profits from the £1 million home he has recently sold. The judge ruled that this was the price he was required to pay to her because he had denied her the type of financial security that a wife would be bestowed.
Her name had been added to the paperwork for the house but it has since been revealed that it was only on the documents so that he could apply for a cheaper mortgage.
He was married in the past which ended in a messy divorce, this probably had a negative impact on his view of relationships however he went on to have three children with his partner. Evidence has shown his tendency to dominate and humiliate the women he has had relationships with.
In front of all their family on Christmas day 2009, he presented his partner with his grandmother’s engagement ring and proposed, but quickly whispered in her ear that he had no intention of ever actually marrying her because he thought “someone better might come along.”
It is unclear whether their relationship was a loving one, or one that was based solely on their finances. She has admitted that part of the reason she was so keen to marry him was a way of her stabilising her own financial security.
The legal costs for this case are expected to reach £150,000 which will also be his responsibility to pay.
