Employment law: Acas urge Employer support to parents of ill children

Employers are being urged to offer support to workers who give birth to premature or ill babies.

The conciliation service Acas has urged employers to be flexible in giving time off to parents so they can attend hospital appointments.

Acas Chief Executive, Anne Sharp has said that: ‘There are over 95,000 premature or sick babies born each year in the UK.’

We can imagine that for these families this is extremely upsetting and difficult time. Working parents in these circumstances often find themselves juggling looking after their new-born, other family members and the day to day demands of their job.

Please follow the link below to access the ACAS guide which was published yesterday: http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=6049

The guide explains the law in a way which should help employers support working parents whilst taking account of the needs of their business.

Vaishali Thakerar, Head of Lawson-West’s Employment department, comments: ”Most employers do treat their staff with compassion but there are employers who do not do this. Working parents need support and assistance when they are going through a difficult time.”
