Not So Super-Market
As we have previously reported, supermarket chain Asda was taken to an employment tribunal last year due to a high volume of pay discrepancies between male and female staff.
The tribunal took place in October 2016 where the Judge ruled in favour of the employees and granted that female and male colleagues did carry out exactly the same roles - most of which were warehouse based. Asda appealed this decision which was subsequently dismissed.
Head of the Lawson-West Employment department, Vaishali Thakerar comments: “Asda have gone to tribunal in order to protect their best interests. However, these efforts would have been better spent ensuring that their male and female staff receive equal pay.
The world of retail and particularly supermarkets is very competitive. By taking on board the advice the Judge provided they should be looking to place themselves as industry leaders and turning this case around.
