SPOTLIGHT ON… Sunahjit Mahal

Family Solicitor, Sunahjit Mahal, joins Lawson West Solicitors

When did you qualify as a Solicitor?

I studied LLB Law at the University of Leicester and graduated in 2019. I then went onto work as a Paralegal whilst studying the LPC from 2020-2022 at De Montfort University, receiving a Distinction overall. I qualified as a Solicitor in November 2023 after completing my Training Contract in 1 and ½ years.

When did you begin to specialise in Family Law?

I began my family law career as a Paralegal over 4 years ago at other prominent family law firms and now have experience in all areas of family law, with a particular passion for cases involving the arrangements for and the wellbeing of children. Whilst specialising in family law, I always put my clients’ needs first, listening and supporting clients throughout what is invariably a difficult and stressful time for them.

My devotion and passion for helping people means that I strive to work with my clients to not only resolve matters without the need for unnecessary litigation but also in a way that means I always represent my clients’ best interests to get the best possible result for them.

What is your greatest success?

So far, my greatest success is undertaking advocacy in over 100 Hearings since beginning my Training Contract to date, including Hearings such as First Hearings, Dispute Resolution Appointments, Contested Final Hearings (including cross-examination), as well as a High Court Hearing. Over the course of just my Training Contract, I undertook advocacy in 45 Hearings myself, gaining the knowledge and experience required to effectively represent many types of clients.

Favourite Testimonial:

I couldn’t have asked for a better solicitor. Sunahjit has always answered all of my questions & helped to put my fears & anxieties to ease when attending court. She was with me every step of the way & supported me through a very traumatic period. I can’t thank her enough for all of her time & hard work in enabling us to be safe.” - SB

Interests/Hobbies:

I currently hold a brown belt in Karate (Leicester and Loughborough Shotokan) and am working towards achieving my black belt. I also enjoy scenery painting, such as painting city skylines, beaches, sunsets and much more as well as travelling and new experiences.

As a proud Sikh of Punjabi descent, in my spare time, I also assist other minorities to enter the legal progression through help with CV’s and applications etc.
