Death: Why we should be talking about it
Why is death a “taboo” subject?
Have you ever thought about the different words used to describe death? I have heard lots of expressions used, from “passed away” and “lost” all the way to “kicked the bucket” and “popped their clogs”. People often use these phrases to avoid saying the word “death” in the hope it will make the idea more palatable, or easier to comprehend.
Unfortunately, death comes to us all; it is what makes us human. However, we can all hope for a “good death”.
What elements contribute to a “good death”?
I believe that there are multiple components to a “good death”.
- Predictability – uncertainty brings anxiety and worry.
- Comfort – pain and suffering are not things we tend to desire.
- Preparedness – being prepared brings comfort to the patient, not only as they know their affairs are in order, but they know that their family and friends are well cared for when the time comes.
- Control – being able to be comfortable and safe in the place that you die, and having control over your situation
The importance of having control and being prepared
Although the list above is not exhaustive, I think that that factors of a “good death” all lead into the same ideas; having control and being prepared. If you have control, you can orchestrate the ideal situation for you and your family, whatever that may be.
Having control means talking about death. Being prepared means talking about death. It is not pleasant, and can be upsetting, but if you have control, ultimately you are likely to be better placed for a “good death”.
How can Lawson-West Solicitors help you prepare for the inevitable?
At Lawson-West, we understand that death is not something that you want to talk about, but that it is more of a requirement to prepare. We can also reassure you that talking about death, and making preparations for it, does not mean you will die imminently. In fact, the earlier you begin to contemplate planning for your death, the more control you have over it.
We can help you by talking about your circumstances, and tailoring your plans to you. We can help you to create a Will, so that when the time comes, your possessions are distributed to those you hold most dear. We can create Lasting Powers of Attorney, so that if you fall ill before your death, you have already decided who deals with your finances and health. We can also help your family to deal with your possessions after your death, and to administer your estate in accordance with your Will and the law.
